Where to trail run in Normandy
The forests around Rouen
Three state forests surround the city: the Forêt Verte to the north, Roumare to the west, La Londe-Rouvray to the south. Miles of paths and single tracks, a quarter of an hour from the centre.
Suisse Normande (Calvados and Orne)
The "mountains of Normandy": around Clécy, the Orne valley has the most elevation in the region. The 1000D Suisse Normande Trail starts there every autumn.
Alabaster Coast (Seine-Maritime)
The GR 21 runs along the clifftops between Étretat and Fécamp. Every valley means a drop to the sea then a short, steep climb back: ideal for hill work.
Seine loops and Brotonne forest
Smoother forest trails in the Boucles de la Seine Normande regional nature park: the right terrain for long endurance runs.
Cotentin and La Hague (Manche)
The GR 223 follows the capes and coves: technical coastal paths, headwinds and sea views all the way.
On the road, in Rouen
The Seine quays are flat, on both banks. And the Urban Trail de Rouen, every November, mixes stairs, lanes and monuments of the historic centre.
When to run in Normandy?
All year round. Autumn is trail season, winter makes the paths muddy (wear shoes with grip), and summer is best run early in the morning or in the shade of the forests.
Good habits
From autumn to the end of winter, hunts take place in the forests: follow the signs and wear a bright colour. On the coast, keep away from the cliff edges and check the tide times before running on the beach.
