Hiking in Normandy
For hiking in Normandy, four areas stand out: the cliffs of the Alabaster Coast, the hills of the Suisse Normande, the wild Cotentin coastline and the loops of the Seine. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons. And so you don't walk alone, local hikers post their sessions on Buddiz.

The best places to hike in Normandy
Alabaster Coast (Seine-Maritime)
White chalk cliffs from Le Havre to Le Tréport, with Étretat, Fécamp and Dieppe as starting points. The GR 21 links Le Havre to Le Tréport (about 180 km) and runs along the clifftops between Étretat and Fécamp.
Suisse Normande (Calvados and Orne)
The hilliest part of the region, around Clécy and the Orne valley: ridge paths, rocks and real climbs. The Pain de Sucre is the best-known viewpoint.
Cotentin and the coast (Manche, Calvados)
The GR 223, the old customs officers' path, follows the coast from Honfleur to Mont-Saint-Michel. In the Cotentin it takes in the capes and coves of La Hague, the wildest corner of Normandy.
Seine loops (Seine-Maritime and Eure)
Forests, river bends and abbeys between Rouen and the sea, in the Boucles de la Seine Normande regional nature park: Brotonne forest, Jumièges, Saint-Wandrille. Easy loops, less than an hour from Rouen.
Mont-Saint-Michel bay (Manche)
Crossing the bay on foot is a classic, but never alone: the tide comes in very fast and quicksand is real. Only go with an approved guide, booked through the tourist office.
Perche and bocage (Orne)
Hills, forests and sunken lanes in the Perche regional nature park: gentle hikes, away from the coastal crowds.
When to hike in Normandy?
From April to June, then in September and October: mild temperatures and fewer people on the coast. Summer is still pleasant, but the coastline gets busy. In winter, countryside and forest paths turn muddy: bring high boots.
Good habits
On the coast, check the tide times before going down to the beach: the sea can cut off the way back at the foot of the cliffs. Keep away from cliff edges, which are prone to rockfalls. And always pack a waterproof layer: Normandy weather changes fast.
